Although it's easy to overlook this humble eatery, situated as it is on a particularly inhospitable stretch of Jones Street in the Tenderloin, Shalimar has managed to attract a loyal clientele of foodies and Indian food fans on a budget -- the restaurant regularly makes it to the lists of the top restaurants in the Bay Area.
From Shalimar's tandoor oven comes a collection of fluffy naan breads, tandoori chicken and lamb kebabs; while treats like flaky paratha (a bread made with crispy with layers of ghee, then stuffed with potatoes, onions and garlic), aloo palak methi (potatoes, spinach and fenugreek) and golden lentil daal spiced with sauteed chilis are guaranteed to fill you up and get you change back from a ten-spot.
In contrast to its romantic name, Shalimar's décor is plain and drab. Plus, the neighborhood is a drag. But don't let that stop you from experiencing one of the city's top Indian culinary hotspots.
