Fisherman's Wharf is one of San Francisco's most popular and famous sights. Though often bustling with tourists, there is a reason. It's fun. Where else can you get accosted by crab sellers everywhere you look? You can tell who are the tourists; they're the ones wearing shorts. Bring a jacket, then go for a stroll on the wharf. The best seafood is to be found on the street; pick a stand then try some simple clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. Save your money for dinner. Many good sit-down restaurants can be found all over area.
Fisherman's Wharf offers many attractions such as engaging ferries for trips to Alcatraz, Angel Island, Tiburon, and Sausalito; chartering fishing and tour boats; buying all kinds of items; and of course, lots of eating and drinking. The wharf is also near other well known haunts such as PIER 39, The Hyde Street Cable Car Line, Ghirardelli Square, the Cannery, and other local favorites. There are great views from the wharf stretching out into the Bay. It is a great place to people watch. The actual marinas are interesting too, where many beautiful private boats are moored.
The Ripley's Believe it Or Not Museum, on the south side of Jefferson Street, hosts many oddball, silly, weird and funny attractions. The museum is open 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. and stays open until midnight on weekends. Call (415) 771-6188.
Another fascinating sight on Fisherman's Wharf is the World War II-era submarine, Pampanito. This gallant grey submarine, berthed on Pier 45, cruised through the Pacific on six tours of duty during World War II. It was responsible for the sinking of 27,000 enemy tons. This sub is available for boarding and visitors can get a glimpse of the tight quarters the sailors had to endure for months at a time. It provides a sober look at the price of freedom. The submarine is open year round. Call for details at: (415) 561-6662.
The Fisherman's Wharf area is worth a visit and provides safe, fun activities for the whole family. Just bring lots of money.
